AMBACTI

AMBACTI according to Festus, s.v. the name for slaves in the Gallic language. Caesar (Caes. Gal. 6.15) mentions them along with the clientes. The most probable opinion is that they were of free origin, but had become practically the unfree retainers of their chief. (Mommsen, Rom. Hist. iv. pp. 223-4.)
