[109] Τριτωνίς: cf. the Homeric Τριτογένεια. Lake Tritonis in Libya (4. 1391) was connected by legend with the birth of Athene, as were also three rivers which bore the name Triton. The Schol. says here, Τρίτωνες τρεῖς Βοιωτίας, Θεσσαλίας, Λιβύης, ἐν δὲ τῷ κατὰ Λιβύην ἐτέχθη Ἀθηνᾶ, and on 4. 1311, Τρίτων ποταμὸς Λιβύης: ἐστὶ δὲ καὶ Βοιωτίας: δοκεῖ δὲ Ἀθηνᾶ παρ᾽ ἑτέρῳ αὐτῶν γεγενῆσθαι. Cf. Ellis on Cat. 64. 395,rapidi Tritonis hera.
