[104] “Ἑρμείας κτλ”.: Hermes, the messenger of the gods, bore the “σκῆπτρον” from Zeus to Pelops, as a symbol of empire. The kingdom descended with the sceptre. Pelops, son of Tantalus, went from Lydia to Elis, won the hand of the princess Hippodamia in a chariot race (hence “πλήξιππος”, equiv. to “ἱππότα, ἱππόδαμος, ἱππηλάτα”), established his rule, and gave its name to Peloponnesus (a name not found in Homer).
