[558] ἄγων: for the use of the partic., cf. “ἀμφιέποντες” v. 525.—Ajax here is brought into such close connection with Athens that he appears as a national hero of Attica. This was in accord with the later Athenian tradition. One of the ten tribes (“φυλαί”) of Attica was named “Αἰαντίς”, after him.
