[*] 175. The verb must take the dative without an intervening outer object. So in “διδόναι πλοῦτον τοῖς Ἕλλησιν”, AR. Pax, 1321, “τοῖς Ἕλλησιν” cannot be turned into the subject of the passive. Rare is such a construction as “ἀναστήσαντες δὲ αὐτοὺς οἱ . . . ἐπιτετραμμένοι τὴν φυλακήν”, THUC.1.126.11, where we should expect “οἷς ἐπετέτραπτο ἡ φυλακή. τὴν φυλακήν” is a manner of inner object.
