[353] praecerpens: clipping down (before him as he advances); the word apparently occurs only here in this meaning, though the figurative meaning in Gell. 2.30.2 “cuius rei causam, cum Aristotelis libros problematorum praecerperemus, notavi” seems to point in the same direction; cf. Apoll. Rh. 3.1386 “προτάμωνται ἀρούρας” .
