A pledge of secrecy to Cornelius, otherwise unknown: for he apparently was not Cornelius Nepos (cf. Catul. 1.3), if we may judge anything from the tone of equality rather than of inferiority that prevalis here; nor is it likely that he was the Brixian Cornelius (cf. Catul. 67.35), for whom Catullus had no regard.

tacito: dative.

[2] cuius: referring to tacito.

[2] fides animi: on the pleonastic genitive cf. Catul. 2.10n. animi curas.

[3] meque: for me quoque or et me.

[3] illorum: i. e. tacitorum, apparently with a reference to initiation into the mysteries.

[3] iure sacratum: i. e. initiatum.

[4] Harpocratem: cf. Catul. 74.4n.
