τούτου is not intended to anticipate the ὅπως clause, but means— like αὐτό below—our system of education. This is clear from διαφθαρέν, which is the antithesis to σῳζομένη above, and like it, is said of the παιδεία. τὸ μὴ νεωτερίζειν is in loose apposition to αὐτό.

τὴν -- ἀμφιπέληται. Od. I 351 f. τὴν γὰρ ἀοιδὴν μᾶλλον ἐπικλείουσ᾽ ἄνθρωποι κτλ. Plato's variant probably points to a different recension; for ἐπιφρονεύουσιν (sic) ἐπακούουσιν in Hesychius seems to refer to the same passage (Schneider). For the sentiment cf. Pind. Ol. 9. 48 αἴνει δὲ παλαιὸν μὲν οἶνον, ἄνθεα δ᾽ ὕμνων | νεωτέρων, Xen. Cyr. I 6. 38 and many other illustrations in Smyth Greek Melic Poets p. 174.
