ὥσπερ κτλ. Handicrafts were usually hereditary among the Greeks: cf. Prot. 328 A and Blümner Privatalt. p. 395 notes διακονεῖν should be taken with ἄξουσι. The change of construction is illustrated by Schneider (Addit. p. 41) from Tim. 74 B ἐμηχανᾶτο, ἵνα—παρέχοι, τὴν δὲ σάρκα—ἔσεσθαι κτλ. Herwerden inserts δεῖ, and Richards διδάσκωνται, after θέᾳ, but the text is probably sound.
