ἥξουσι πετόμενοι: ‘will wing their way.’ πετόμενοι leads up to κηφῆνας.

τὸν μισθόν: ‘the pay,’ i.e. ‘the necessary pay’ (J. and C.). W. H. Thompson would omit τόν or replace it by μόνον: but insufficient pay would not attract mercenaries.
