ἀντεχομένων. The middle of ἀντέχω in the sense of ‘resist’ is extremely rare; but occurs in Arist. H. A. VII 3. 583^{a} 18, possibly in Xen. de Ven. 6. 6, and occasionally in later Greek: see Stephanus-Hase Thes. s.v. The presence of μαχομένων makes it unlikely that ἀντεχομένων means ‘cleaving to’ sc. in the attitude of supplication. οὐκ ἀναγκαίας. The adjective ἀναγκαῖος throughout this sentence combines the two senses of ‘necessary’ )( ‘superfluous,’ and ‘related by the ties of blood.’ Bosanquet justly draws attention to the singular pathos and pietas of Plato's words: cf.
