[61] The figure is that of a Bacchante speechless, motionless, and utterly forgetful of her own appearance through the very exaltation of her wild emotions; cf. Hor. Carm. 3.25.8 “non secus in iugis Edonis stupet Euhias Hebrum prospiciens” ; Ovid Her. 10.49 mare prospiciens in saxo frigida sedi, quamque lapis sedes, tam lapis spsa fui.
