[320] vellentes vellera: i.e. beginning their spinning by drawing from the mass of wool on the distaff the filaments to form the yarn cf. Ov. Met. 14.264 “quae vellera motis nulla trahunt digitis nec fila sequentia ducunt” . With the triple alliteration cf. v. 262.
