[182] ἐναίσιμοι, ‘fateful,’ ‘teaching fate,’ ‘significant;’ so Schol. “μαντικοί, τὸ εἱμαρμένον σημαίνοντες”. The first business of the seer is to discriminate the “ἐναίσιμοι”, which Prometheus implies in his description of his revelations to men ( P. V.484 foll.) “τρόπους δὲ πολλοὺς μαντικῆς ἐστοίχισα”,
“κἄκρινα πρῶτος ἐξ ὀνειράτων ἃ χρὴ”“ὕπαρ γενέσθαι, κλῃδόνας τε δυσκρίτους”
“ἐγνώρισ᾽ αὐτοῖς”. Compare the words of Theoclymenus, Od.15. 531“οὔ τοι ἄνευ θεοῦ ἔπτατο δεξιὸς ὄρνις:”
“ἔγνων γάρ μιν ἔσαντα ἰδὼν οἰωνὸν ἐόντα”.
