[68] Γερήνιος. The name of the town, from which this epithet is derived, is variously given as “Γερηνία, Γέρηνον” or “-νος” Hes. Frag. 22, Eustath.; “Γερήνη” Schol. on Il.2. 336; or, lastly, “Γέρηνα” (“τά”) Strab.7. 299, etc. This town on the Messenian gulf, not named in the Homeric text except in the epithet, is identified by Pausanias (3. 26. 8) with the Homeric “Ἐνόπη” Il.9. 150, and is supposed to be on the same site as the modern Zernáta or Pasova. Nestor was said to have been brought up there, or to have taken refuge there, when Heracles ravaged Pylos. Apollonius and Suidas do not take it as a proper name, but interpret it by “ἔντιμος”, which implies a connection with “γέρας”, or “γέρων”.
