This text is part of:
ἐς πᾶν ἤδη κακοῦ ἀπιγμένοι ἦσαν: cp. 7. 118 ἐς π. κ. ἀπίκατο οὕτω ὥστε ... ἐγίνοντο. But ἀπιγμένοι ἦσαν here is not perhaps a mere equivalent to ἀπίκατο there. The phrase here is more extensive (e.g. ἤδη). Cp. c. 115 supra.
τόνους: purely concrete, and no doubt of leather = ἱμάντας (5. 25). Cp. Aristoph. Lys. 923, Ekk. 533 (cp. 7. 36).
ὄπισθε τοῦ τείχεος: on the side of the wall away from the Athenian lines, which did not surround the city. τῶν πολεμίων, sc. τῶν Ἀθηναίων. Could this turn occur in an Attic source?
οἱ Χερσονησῖται: the inhabitants of the Chersonese ἀπὸ πασέων τῶν πολίων, cp. 4. 137, 6. 38, 39. (The names of upwards of forty places are recoverable, cp. Pauly-Wissowa iii. 2247 f. Of these about nine are found in Hdt., viz. Ἀγορή 7. 58, Αἰγὸς ποταμοί c. 119 infra, Ἐλαιοῦς c. 116 supra, etc., Ἕλλης τάφος 7. 58, Καρδίη c. 115 supra, ete., Λευκὴ ἀκτή 7. 25, Μάδυτος 7. 33, c. 120 infra, Πακτύη 6. 36, Σηστός c. 114 supra, etc.)
εἶχον, ‘mounted guard on . .,’ a very strong ἔχειν.
