For the Lacedaemonian custom cf. the story in Cic. de Sen. 18, of the Lacedaemonian envoys setting the Athenians an example of respect for old age. Respect to parents is a frequent subject in the papyri; it is so common, however, among all nations (cf., e. g., Levit. xix. 32 ‘Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head’), that it seems strange H. should deem it worthy of notice.
