τῶν: i. e. the Ionians. The sign (γνῶμα) is explained in the clause after ὅτι. The fidelity of the Ionian tyrants in the Scythian expedi tion was founded on self-interest (iv. 137), and was but a poor proof of the loyalty of their people when opposed to brother Hellenes.
