τόξα. For the Ethiopian bows cf. vii. 69; the unstrung bow was the symbol for Ethiopia in the hieroglyphs. Bruce (Travels, iv 42, ed. of 1805) says the Abyssinian bows are so adorned with bands of hide that in the end they become unbendable.
