Ephesus was at this time the natural starting-point for a journey to Upper Asia (ch. 100, viii. 103). The trade-route of later days (Strab. 663) went by the easier valleys of the Maeander and Lycus to Apameia-Celaenae, and so south of the central desert, but to reach Sardis and the Royal road from Ephesus Mount Tmolus must be crossed. In the days of the Lydian power probably the road from Sardis to the coast had led down the Hermus to Smyrna and Phocaea.
