δέκα ἡμερέων ὁδός. The first distance to the Borysthenes is fairly right; the second is really much shorter, being about 130 miles. H. mentions the Palus Maeotis as being the main part of his eastern boundary. τὸ ἀπὸ θαλάσσης ἐς μεσόγαιαν corresponds to τὰ ὄρθια τὰ ἐς τὴν μεσόγαιαν φέροντα below and to τὸ ἐς τὴν μεσόγαιαν φέρον (§ 1) above. διηκόσια στάδια. In v. 53 H. allows only 150 stades a day on the Royal Road; but South Russia is unusually flat.
