Since Sicyon paid the fine, at a time when Argos was too weak to enforce it, probably Argos had the right to impose it, as head of a religious association and guardian of the temple of Apollo Pythaeus (Thuc. v. 53. 47, with Busolt, Lakedaimonier, p. 83 f.). But the presidency of a religious amphictyony could be, and was by Pheidon, used to advance a claim to political suzerainty over the whole ‘lot of Temenus’. πεντάεθλον ἐπασκήσας (cf. ix. 105). ‘Having practised the pentathlum’ (cf. ix. 75) implies a victory which Pausanias (i. 29. 5) tells us was won at Nemea.
