μετῆκάν οἱ. Stein translates ‘sank their spears to Bagaeus’, i. e. recognized him as their new leader; he compares ‘summissis fascibus’ (Liv. ii. 7). But the use of μεθίημι in ix. 62. 1 rather suggests the sense ‘let go their spears’, i.e. no longer stood at attention. οἱ then would be Oroetes. The whole scene is worked up by H. with picturesque details.
