ἄλλο σφι ὕδωρ. Macan (ad loc.) has an interesting note on H.'s marks of time, of which there are seven here, cf. iii. 104. 2 n. The ‘spring of the sun’ (cf. Arr. Anab. iii. 4; Lucret. vi. 848 seq.) has been identified near the temple; it is a volcanic spring, hence the appearance of boiling (ζέει, § 4) from sulphureous bubbles, the water is naturally warm, but feels cooler by day from contrast to the air. H.'s informants have exaggerated a misunderstood natural phenomenon into a marvel.
