εἰρεσίῃ. H. uses this measurement of the Caspian (i. 203. 1 n.); for a ‘day's sail’ cf. vii. 183. 3 n. His calculation seems to suit the length of the Red Sea (which is about 1,200 miles), but his breadth is much too small; he seems to have confused the northwest arm, the Gulf of Suez, and the main sea. The former averages 30 miles in breadth, but the sea itself varies from 130 miles in the north to 250 in the south (E. B. xxii. 970).
