τὰ ὦτα ἀπέταμε. For such mutilations cf iii. 118, 154, and ix. 112, and the rigorous justice of the younger Cyrus (Xen. Anab. i. 9. 13; also B. I. ii. 13); no mutilated person could ever reign. Perhaps the story is based on a play of words, the Persian word for Magian being interpreted ‘a man having no ears’ (J. R. A. S., 1890, p. 822).
