ὀρθότατα . . . καλεόμενος. H. clearly connects ‘Papaeus’ with Πάππας (= ‘father’, Od. vi. 57); he no doubt was familiar with the Bithynian ‘Zeus Papas’ (Arrian, fr. 39; F. H. G. iii. 592). The name is one of familiar affection, of a type perhaps characteristic of Asia Minor (Roscher s. v.). For guesses at the etymology of these names cf. Rawlinson, iii. 194 seq.: Müllenhoff, D. A. iii. 108 sees in ‘Tabiti’ the root ‘tap’ (‘to burn’, cf. tepidus).
