τὸν ζωστῆρα: translate ‘(the way to clasp) the belt’. The Scyths pictured on the vases carry no cups; Stein explains the φιάλη as the broad flat clasp on which the girdle ends fasten; but this is not what H. says (§ 3).

Agathyrsus and Gelonus represent the tribes to the north-west and the north-east respectively of Scythia proper (cf. c. 104; v. 108). We should have expected Βουδῖνον for Γελωνόν.
