γεγονώς . . . κακῶς. The low birth of Maeandrius would recommend him to the tyrant. (Cf. Arist. Pol. 1314 a “πονηρόφιλον ἡ τυραννίς”.) He was a citizen (123. 1), but is called ἡμέτερος δοῦλος by Syloson (140. 5). So Micythus, οἰκέτης ἐών, was appointed ruler of Tarentum by Anaxilaus (vii. 170. 4 n.).
