The mummy was kept ‘upright’ for a time, till the death sacrifices, &c., ceased; then it was transferred to a lower ‘vault’, where it was laid down. The vaults of the rich were often hewn out of the hills, because of the dryness of the air there. It seems probable, however, that in the Fayûm the mummies were kept above ground, owing to the dampness of the soil.
