πρόφασιν: in the unusual sense of ‘suggestion’. Cf. Soph. Trach. 662 “ἐπὶ προφάσει θηρός” (v. l. προφάνσει). ὁκόσον refers to the participle ἄρξαντα, not to the main verb ἐκχωρήσειν.
