The rooms, opening on to the central court, would have no external windows. Darius affirms (in the B. I.) three times that he slew Gomates himself. Aeschylus (Pers. 776) assigns the deed to Artaphrenes, substituting the familiar name (v. 25 et pass.) for the unfamiliar Intaphrenes.
