ἐξεῖλον: translate ‘they clean out the belly completely’; cf. 40. 1 n. ἐξεῖλον is taken up by ἐκκαθήραντες. The viscera extracted were placed in four jars, popularly but wrongly called ‘Canopic jars’, each covered with the head of a genius, a son of Osiris (cf. Erman, E. p. 306, for picture).
