ἁρπεδόνη ἑκάστη. Pliny (xix. 12) says the ‘distinctness’ of the ‘threads’ in the θώρηξ was so often tested by sightseers that ‘parvas iam reliquias superesse hac experientium iniuria’. For the work cf. Ezek. xxvii. 7, ‘fine linen with broidered work from Egypt.’

Amasis was trying no doubt to induce the Lacedaemonians (αὐτοῖσι) to join an anti-Persian league (cf. i. 46 n.).
