[240] ἔμπεδος. It may be asked whether Circe's sorcery had been perfectly successful. She gave them “φάρμακα λύγῤ, ἵνα πάγχυ λαθοίατο πατρίδος αἴης”, but though she succeeded in turning them into swine, the νοῦς remained unaltered. Still, in v. 397 inf. they failed to recognise Odysseus, till Circe “προσάλειφεν ἑκάστῳ φάρμακον ἄλλο”.
