[225] Μέντωρ. This is the only passage in which Mentor appears in propria persona; elsewhere it is Pallas personating him. Pallas does, however, in the assembly of the gods ( Od.5. 8-12), use, as though they were her own, the very words of Mentor in vv. 230-234. Fäsi notices the similarity of the name of the Taphian Mentes, whose appearance is likewise assumed by Athena, Od.1. 105.Odysseus, in addressing the simulated Mentor ( Od.22. 208), thus accosts him, “Μέντορ, ἄμυνον ἀρὴν, μνῆσαι δ᾽ ἑτάροιο φίλοιο”,

ὅς σ᾽ ἀγαθὰ ῥέζεσκον, ὁμηλικίη δ᾽ ἐμοί ἐσσι”.
