[388] κρήδεμνα ‘the diadem of towers’: from Il.16. 100“ὄφρ᾽ οἶοι Τροίης ἱερὰ κρήδεμνα λύωμεν”. This picturesque phrase is a sort of refinement upon the more ordinary metaphor by which the battlements of a town are called its ‘head’: as in Il.2. 117“ὃς δὴ πολλάων πολίων κατέλυσε κάρηνα”.
