[363] The literal meaning of πλαγκτός is ‘sent adrift,’ hence ‘unsettled,’ ‘crazy.’ Cp. the rocks called “Πλαγκταί” because they moved about (12. 61., 23. 327). For the metaphor as applied to the mind cp. “φρένας ἐκπεπαταγμένος” ( Od.18. 327), “φρένες ἠερέθονται” ( Il.3. 108), “φρένες ἔμπεδοι” ( Od.18. 215).
