[170] μηρύσαντο. The connection of this word with “μήρινθος” and “μέρμις” would seem to describe the process of ‘brailing up’ the sail, for which we have in Od.3. 11στεῖλαν ἀείραντες”, where see note. But against this we have the statement that they ‘stowed the sail away in the hollow ship,’ implying that it was altogether lowered from the mast. Cp. “ναῦται δ᾽ ἐμηρύσαντο νηὸς ἰσχάδα”, of ‘weighing anchor,’ Soph. Frag. 699.
