[236] ἑτεραλκέα νίκην, a phrase taken from the Iliad, where it probably means ‘victory by other strength,’ i.e. by an accession of strength (see Il.7. 26). This suits the present passage. Athene did not yet give ‘other’ “ἀλκή”, i. e. her own help, but still made trial of the “ἀλκή” of Ulysses and his son.
