[117] Here φρένες ἐσθλαί has no moral significance, but refers only to intellectual qualities, cp. Od.11. 367; Il.17. 470.The word is used in a similar connection, Il.13. 431πᾶσαν γὰρ ὁμηλικίην ἐκέκαστο

κάλλεϊ καὶ ἔργοισιν ἰδὲ φρεσί”, where, as here, “ἔργα” specially refers to the work of spinning or weaving.
