[257] τὸν γὰρ φιλέεσκε μάλιστα must mean that Eurymachus was especially kind to Melanthius. Cp. for the change of subject, and also the usage of “φιλέω, 7. 171 ὅς οἱ πλησίον ἷζε, μάλιστα δέ μιν φιλέεσκε”, Il.3. 388.The word applies to the protector, hardly to the protégé.
