[331] ταρβήσαντε: the aor. seems to mean ‘struck with alarm’ at his look (“δεινὸς ἀνήρ: τάχα κεν καὶ ἀναίτιον αἰτιόωιτο”, Patroklos says, 11.654); while the pres. “αἰδομένω” implies their permanent respect. For the juxtaposition of the two ideas compare the favourite “δεινὸς αἰδοῖός τε”.
