[742] Cf. 18.252ἔγχεϊ πολλὸν ἐνίκα,Od. 3.121μάλα πολλὸν ἐνίκα παντοίοισι δόλοισι” for the absolute use ‘to be first,’ with dat. This is the only instance where the subject of the verb “νικᾶν” is a concrete thing; abstract subjects are found in 604, Od. 10.46 (“βουλή”), 1.576, Od. 18.404 (“τὰ χερείονα”).
