[742] Cf. 18.252 “ἔγχεϊ πολλὸν ἐνίκα,” Od. 3.121 “μάλα πολλὸν ἐνίκα παντοίοισι δόλοισι” for the absolute use ‘to be first,’ with dat. This is the only instance where the subject of the verb “νικᾶν” is a concrete thing; abstract subjects are found in 604, Od. 10.46 (“βουλή”), 1.576, Od. 18.404 (“τὰ χερείονα”).
