[331] ἀκούετο: the only case in H. of the middle form in the present or imperf. It is possible that this implies a conscious listening rather than a mere physical hearing; if they were not attending to the battle-cry, there is more ground for Agamemnon's rebuke than if they had not yet heard it. There seems to be a similar distinction in many cases between “ὁρῶ” and “ὁρῶμαι”, though they are often identical (cf. 1.203). See H. G. § 8.
