These lines are practically meaningless as the book stands, for the ineffective attack on the wall by Sarpedon has in the end no bearing whatever on Hector's successful assault on the gate. They are introduced apparently for the sake of a superficial harmony between the two attacks, which were originally independent and alike successful (see Introd.), by suggesting that one led up to the other.
