[243] “ γὰρ ὄχ᾽ ἄριστος” Heyne, to explain the variant “γάρ κ᾽ ὄχ᾽ ἄριστος”, where the “κ̓” is meaningless. The lengthening of γάρ will be parallel to that of “κεν” just before — unless two such licenses in the line are considered too much (“πᾶσιν, ὅπως κ᾽ ἐθέληισιν” van L.).
