[708] μάλα must be taken with the preceding partic. as 17.571ἐργομένη μάλα,Od. 24.400ἐελδομένοισι μάλ᾽ ἡμῖν”. This weakens the caesura and gives a disagreeable rhythm, but that is to be reckoned among the other peculiarities of this doubtful passage. “μάλα” intensifies the idea of closeness given by “παρ”-, as in 17.502μάλ᾽ ἐμπνείοντε μεταφρένωι”, cf. 17.359μάλ᾽ ἀμφ᾽ αὐτῶι βεβάμεν”.
