[378] τόσσον μέν, cf. 22.322, 23.454, and on 4.130; ‘they were so far finished, but the handles were not affixed’ is a slight anacoluthon as easily intelligible in English as in Greek. δεσμούς, rivets (elsewhere in the general sense ‘bond’). The oldest Greek bronze tripods found at Olympia are thus fastened; the welding of bronze was a comparatively late discovery. οὔατα, handles, ‘lugs,’ as 11.632.
