[302] This is the only clear case in H. of the use of μή for “οὐ” in a ‘quasi-conditional’ relative clause with the indic. Cf. 143, 338, 7.236, 18.363 (H. G. § 359). The κῆρες, acc. to Rohde, are the demons, originally themselves ghosts, who hover about the earth to carry off the spirits of the departing to Hades. The cult of the dead had its origin in the wish to appease this malignant troop.
